To many people involved with UFOs, the name Nick Pope will no doubt be familiar. For those who aren't, Nick used to run the UFO Desk for the British Ministry of Defence back in the early 1990's.
Although he took the role with no preconceptions about the nature of UFO sightings, it wasn't long before he realised that this wasn't a subject to be dismissed out of hand. There were several incidents which not only surprised Nick, but proved to him that there was a genuine phenomenon to be studied, and that it impacted on all levels of society.
Unfortunately, there are those who will continue to label Nick as a stooge, ie someone working for the government still and just pacifying the public regarding the UFO. There are also those who think he had very little to do with the MODs real interest in UFOs, with Nick just being their press person. There are those too who think that Nick has little to offer the UFO community, that they already know what he discusses, and that he offers nothing new.
I interviewed Nick last year for a DVD that has just been released by Reality Entertainment, called "Nick Pope The Man who left the MOD". I found what he had to say extremely interesting to say the least. What struck me the most was how this subject is still debated within the Ministry, and by all accounts as much as it is in public. I can also say that the accusations about Nick, I don't believe any to be true. He did have an important role, and I think it's unfair also to state that he offers nothing new. He researched incidents as they happened, and with the people involved, which is a lot more than some in the UFO community do.
There are cases that Nick talks about on the DVD which are clearly examples of a genuine phenomenon, that isn't going to go away anytime soon. We talked about a variety of things, whether psychology played a part in some sightings, quantum physics and whether it could be one of the answers to the UFO enigma, as well as most of the major cases in the UK. Theres also a funnier side, but you'll need to watch the DVD to see what.
What the DVD shows is that there are many angles to this phenomenon, and that the MOD take the subject very seriously indeed. When you hear reports of jet fighters being overtaken by UFOs, it makes you realise that there isn't much that can rationally explain such incidents, and the others Nick mentions clearly demonstrate something of extreme significance.
Whatever you think of Nick, he was the one handling UFO reports for a number of years and in an official capacity, and is now speaking out about that. In my mind that is to be applauded as is most of what he does. He wants to help, as he is just as mystified about this subject as most of us are, and I'd much rather see someone like Nick on "our side" than the endless predecessors who claimed there was nothing to this, and that it was all just hoaxes or misidentifications.
As an interesting aside to the interview, I was photographed interviewing Nick, in the background of the photo is a framed picture of a strange pyramid shaped object with bunches of strange looking writing to the side.
This was at a Hotel in the UK and had nothing to do with UFOs, but the picture looked like an illustration from the Rendlesham forest incident, which was described as a similar shape with unusual markings.
