A Discussion With Gareth Icke |
Cigarettes and Violins:
By MAD- www.nwowatcher.com
-MAD: Gareth, it’s really great to speak with you today; thanks for taking the time. For those who might not be aware, you are the son of the best selling author David Icke, whose books ‘Children of the Matrix’, and ‘The Biggest Secret’, are some of the most well known works of modern day “conspiracy”. I personally own five books written by your father, and while I do disagree with many of the theories that he puts forth, there’s no doubt that this is some fascinating literature, and I would encourage everyone to read at least one book from David Icke, if they haven’t already. It might sound to be a bit of a generic question to start off with, but what is it like growing up the son of one of the most controversial authors and speakers in the world today?
-G: Hey, No worries, Always a pleasure.
I think it is a generic question but only because it seems to be one that a lot of people are interested in. There is a preconception that our home life was some bizarre cult like experience. It really wasn't different to anyone else’s. We played football and did all the regular things everyone does. The only weirdness came from outside the home. The tabloids following me and my sister to school and people shouting at you in the street. I'm not sure what they thought would happen? Still, you get on with it and it becomes normal. It’s all relative.
--------------------
-MAD: Speaking of controversy, perhaps the most controversial statements made by David are those theories regarding a race of what he basically refers to as “Reptoids”, who are interdimensional beings, from other planets and vibratory realms of existence, which he claims have been controlling world events for hundreds, if not thousands of years. While this might immediately sound “kooky” to most people, I would contend that there is a great deal of symbolic and historical significance to the idea of Reptilian Beings, or Dragon-Kings; amphibious creatures which have shaped and influenced world mythology and civilization. Would you care to share some of your thoughts on the whole issue of Reptilians, and do you think your father has been unfairly criticized by some people for promoting these far-out theories?
-G: I can see that these theories may surprise people. I'm sure my dad was pretty taken aback when he started hearing people’s experiences. If you're researching then surely you must uncover every avenue. I think a lot of 'conspiracy' theorists have their own opinion set in stone. If their research backs up their own opinion then it's in. If they don't agree then it's out in the bin.
If you get told the same thing several times by totally disconnected people all over the world, you surely have to take it and run with it?
--------------------
-MAD: Like your father, who was famous first as a soccer player and sports announcer before becoming a well recognized author, you’re also an accomplished soccer player. I’m very sorry to hear about your bout with perthes disease, a rather de-habilitating affliction that must make it very difficult to exert yourself during sporting events. Do you still play soccer to this day, and have you always had an interest in sports?
-G: I play for England’s beach soccer team these days. It’s a great honor and a privilege to be able to represent my country and travel the world. My younger years were plagued by injuries and I was told as a young child that I wouldn't be able to ride a bike. That's something that gets you fired up, I can tell you. I take every game as it comes as I know that I could quite easily be back there again. I'm very lucky that I've been given a 'second chance'.
--------------------
-MAD: On to the music, you recently parted ways with your band KODY, which won you a bit of critical acclaim with your debut single ‘Cigarettes and Violins’. You have some very heart-felt and impressive tracks amongst your repertoire. I see you’re still recording music with band-mate Tim Pritchard, and will be performing at Viva La Rock night at Londons Viva Viva Club on May 28th. Have you always had a passion in making music, and does the work of your father come into play at all with the creative process of your lyrics and orchestration? Are there any plans to work with David, perhaps on a duel BOOK/CD project? That would be very interesting.
-G: Yeah, the fun had gone from the band. To be honest I felt so much pressure to hold it all together that I just snapped. You can only last so long if nothing is coming the other way.
It's great to be going back to my acoustic roots. Its how the songs are written and I think the simple no frills approach is perfect for me right now. I'll be playing a few festivals this summer and then get another band up together in the autumn. I have a few musicians lined up but I'm just concentrating on writing and being happy. Things are great at the minute. I play on Monday in London and then fly to Tel Aviv on Wednesday to play soccer against Israel. Sounds like I'm showing off huh? Maybe a little...
--------------------
-MAD: Who are some of your favorite musicians, and those which have given you the most inspiration for your own musical career?
-G: I'm all about the old school really. The Smiths, Pixies, Cure, Joy Division. Stuff like that. All very uplifting! My favorite recent artist would have to be Idlewild. Roddy’s lyrics are awesome. Writes all the songs I wish I had. Which is annoying at times!
--------------------
-MAD: In terms of the political realm, what are some of the issues that you feel need more exposure, and which people should further be made aware of in the mass-consciousness of the planet? What are your thoughts on the fact that Tony Blair is stepping down, for instance? Do you follow American politics at all?
-G: Immigration. If you speak out against it then you are a racist. Rubbish. I have friends that are leaving their homes because they are being undermined by immigrants. It’s disgraceful. A friend couldn't get a bed in a hospital in Slough to give birth. She was told she couldn't have a bed in the 'Polish' ward even though there were free beds because she wasn't Polish. What the flubb!?
And an elderly lady had the police at her door in Leicester because she had China pigs on her windowsill. True story! Because they 'offended' the Muslim neighbors.Would be funny if it wasn't so sick and wrong. Rant over.
--------------------
-MAD: George W. Bush. Do you believe that there is a great possibility that the U.S. elections were rigged in his favor for both the 2000 and 2004 elections, and to be blunt, do you feel that the Bush family played some role in the events of 911? If nothing else, do you think that Bush was an accomplice to this tragedy?
-G: Nothing surprises me these days. In fact I think I'd be more shocked if it wasn't rigged!
I was playing a few shows in the States just after 9/11 and the hatred for Bush was immense. When he won again I was taken by surprise. Despite saying that, nothing would surprise me. I'm an idiot.
--------------------
-MAD: I’m not sure how deeply you're involved in “conspiracy theories”, but do you feel there's a difference between the conspiracy chatter (most of "conspiracy" is based on a great deal of evidence and facts) in the UK, to that of the U.S.? Are some of these theories universal, or is there a difference between the main topics of interest between American and European “conspiracy theory”?
-G: I'm not particularly involved in the theories at all. I'll listen to everything and then make my mind up accordingly.
--------------------
-MAD: Who are some of your favorite authors? Are you more drawn to fiction or non-fiction works?
-G: I was a big Douglas Coupland fan. Read everything he touched. Nowadays I'm so busy that if I have time to read I'll normally get my head down! I sound like a real interesting character don't I?
I do read when I'm flying but I just tend to grab something recommended by a mate. Biographies are normally pretty interesting. Probably packed full of lies and misquotations but hey, makes for a good story.
--------------------
-MAD: Do you ever plan on following in your fathers footsteps in terms of becoming an author? Are there any plans for book publications from Gareth Icke? And for the sake of argument, what kinds of books do you think you’d pen if you ever were to become a writer?
-G: It's weird you ask that. I was having this conversation the other day. It was our (Kodys) roadie’s birthday and we hooked up for a few beers. Started reminiscing about the old days and the stories were just crazy. Some funny, some tragic but all really interesting. I was saying that I'd love to write a guide for all young struggling rock bands. The Truth. Not fluffy cloud dreams but the real world that you're going into. It's a book I know I'd love to have read when I was younger.
--------------------
-MAD: That would be a very interesting book. I read a lot of 'Rock and Roll' biographies myself, you should definitely conisder writing that! What kind of films most interest you? Any favorite actors or directors? What's the last good movie you saw?
-G: Girly films. Dirty Dancing, When Harry met Sally... Stuff like that. Cue rumors of me chatting to Elton in a trendy Brighton nightspot.
--------------------
-MAD: Haha! He is a great pianist…! Ummmm, do you have plans to continue with the music, and what are your aspirations in terms of upcoming releases and shows?
-G: Yeah for sure. I'm just chilling out and trying to get the fun back into writing and performing again. Then I'll piece together another band and we'll be back out and on the radio soon, I hope. I figured that no matter how successful you may appear, if you're unhappy then you're just a bit of a loser really. I see plenty of them trawling their briefcases around in their Audis. Minted and miserable. All seems a bit pointless really.
--------------------
-MAD: Gareth, I understand you're busy, but thanks so much for agreeing to this discussion today. I've been both a vocal fan and cynic of your father's works for a few years now, and it's really very cool to get a chance to speak with you personally regarding some of your own thoughts on his books, as well as your own accomplishments. I wish you both the absolute best of luck, and definitely hope that we can somehow keep in touch. Good luck too with the upcoming game, as well as the gigs. You’re next show is on May 28th, during La Rock night at Londons Viva Viva Club.Where as your father might end the discussion today with the profound statement of "Infinite Love is the Only Truth, Everything Else is Illusion", is there anything that Mr. Gareth Icke would like to leave our readers with?
-G: Umm...
Why did the baker have smelly hands?
Cos he kneaded a poo...
Classic. Peace.
