Hello everybody. This is Lonecat out here in Earth orbit trying not to miss a thing that is going on in space and bringing you a brief sampling of some of the astronomical news we have been receiving this past week in our “Astronomy” forum.
It has been an interesting week indeed as far as photographs go but also for the fact that we seem to be seeing more new people sending in contributions. That is just the sort of thing we are looking for. Remember all you newcomers that this forum, (and any other forum on the Book of Thoth, if it comes to that,) that this is indeed a “forum” which means that it is open to all who wish to post interesting news and stories about the subject dealt with; in this particular case, Astronomy and any other subject which could fall under that heading.
Remember that there other forums which handle esoteric themes such as Astrology, so, this Astronomy forum does not handle them for we prefer to stick to “hard science”. However, we do cover astronautics, space-probes to other planets and satellites and exo-biology, such as the search for life on other worlds. Quite apart from merely posting space-science news we also encourage discussion of these subjects so, feel free to start a subject that interests you in connection with astronomy by, maybe, asking a question about it or by asking others for their opinions on a particular issue. We look forward to your postings.
We do not often think of viewing photographs in 3D, but space missions have been taking three-dimensional pictures since shortly after the advent of space exploration and this week we’ve been able to grab some 3-D pictures taken on the surface of Mars and from Mars-orbit. The interesting thing about this link, apart from the stunning 3D photographs, is that it contains a clear explanation as to how to make your own three-dee pictures. You should check this out. Remember that when you want to open any of the links on this page you may be asked to press “Control” (Ctrl) while making a left-hand click.
Another posting, which was sent in by Mad30, a relatively new user of BoT, was also interesting as it is taken from the famous “Fortean Times” website. However, this time it is not about ghosts or Poltergeists. This concerns a rather unsettling story about a Soviet cosmonaut who is just about to leave the Solar system after being lost in space from a Soviet space-mission and, of course, tragically, perishing. At least he is getting there! Read about it in “Lost in Space”
We also had a video film which should really be seen on full screen, of the interior of the American planned “Orion” space-ship which is still being “mocked up”. It gives the viewer a good idea of how it is all going to be (it is to be hoped) when it is all finished. This is the exciting stage of space-ships. This video link seems to have been changed since it was posted last Monday the 21st of July, so it’s worth bearing in mind that you may well see new and fresh videos by clicking onto links that are a few days old just to see what they have been changed to. Nevertheless, I recovered the old link to it and here it is:
Another item on the Astronomy forum which promted quite a few comments was sent in by Robin-shadowes. This deals with some very peculiar artefacts photographed on the moons of Uranus, Eros and Miranda. These pictures are really quite unsettling and worth taking another look at.
Eros and Miranda
You should also take a look at a couple of very impressive photos Phobos, one of Mars’s two natural satellites
So, you see, friends of Book of Thoth, if you are interested in what goes on “out there” rather that “up there”, keep a tag on us here and please don’t forget to send us whatever information or questions you might have concerning “Hard Space”.
I’m sorry but I am now entering Earth-shadow in this particular orbit (Orbit One) and I have things to attend to. Awaiting your astro-reports and questions until the same time next week, this is Lonecat-in-Orbit saying: “Talk later!”
