Looks like the "oldest known animal eggs" might not have been animal eggs at all. It looks like the fossils once classified as 600 million year old eggs might actually be giant bacteria. Oops.

This is even more fascinating considering your recent post on panspermia.
The more research is done on the idea of panspermia, the more promising it looks. In fact, the more I read, the more convinced I become that the "red rain of Keralta" in India is, in fact, "alien" life. I think the more we look into it, the more we're going to realize that bacteria and such are well made for space travel, as odd as it seems at first!
