Sexy Voice
Just recently I have been doing hundreds of radio interviews with a lot of them having phone-ins for the launch of Gnosis: The Secret of Solomon's Temple Revealed book and DVD (www.gnosisbookdvd.com). Now, normally there are some awkward questions that I have to answer, or some comment that makes me squirm; but this time I have not had any arguments, no nasty or off-hand comments. Instead I have been completely thrown off-track by the comments coming from American and Canadian women!
For instance, just this morning as I write this I did Walking with the Spirit Radio show with Monique Chapman in the USA. It was an excellent interview and I got some great questions on the phone-in. But then, yet again came a call from a lovely sounding lady who said I was sexy. Of course my usual answer is that people say that until they meet me. But it got me thinking about this cultural concept.
I tend to question all things and when somebody tells me I am sexy I question that too (not least to discover what it is they like and so to improve upon it!). The various answers normally include the English accent; the deep nature of my voice; my wit and my intellect. Now, anybody who knows me personally will be laughing their heads off at all of this in the same way my wife does. If we break it down then my accent is not so nice to the English, because it has a distinct midlands-Yorkshire element of laziness. We tend not to finish off words very well or construct them as spelt, but the same is true of most accents. I do often try my best to speak properly, especially for the US market where, "ey up me duck", doesn't quite work (translation: "ey up me duck" means "hello"). When I push further about the accent element of the sexy voice statements I discover that there is a perception that the English are more intelligent and more chivalrous than the standard American Joe. Of course this is a massive generalisation and is only the result of my small observations. It seems that not only do the American ladies love the British accent when associated with intelligence, they also trust it more. I can see why certain other ludicrous authors that I shall not name have done so well over in the States and not in Britain - although I myself prefer the States for this market as I see more scope and openness.
As for the "deep nature of my voice" it has been proven that this implies a larger diaphragm and hence more chest muscle and therefore a fitter, healthier and chunky male. Ah, if only it were so. My deep voice is a family trait and not the result of a 6-pack or chest hair. As for my wit and intellect, well that's a subjective thing I suppose. I can be funny to some and stupid to others. I love Monty Python and Father Ted and often my sense of humour is completely missed by American's. That said it is on the British too - well that's my excuse for not getting a laugh. Intellect? If I knew what it meant then I would comment.
But seriously, there is little wonder that wit, intellect and large muscles are prominent in the choice factors of females as these imply caring (wit), cleverness for the hunt (intellect) and strength to see off attackers (muscles). All of these are perfectly normal on the evolutionary scale. The interesting thing for me though is how deceptive a voice can be and play on these inner and unconscious desires.
