In the article it mentions that in the past Ice sheets have been know to shrink within a few hundred years.

Does anyone know when the ice sheets started to shrink? Has it been going on for a long time, and just now in the past few years started to shrink really fast?

You could have a look in used book stores for jr hi and hi school science texts from the late 50's and 60's. I know the So Cal schools were teaching the "ice age gonna get us!" doctrine because I was in school there at the time. As I recall, much of the "evidence" was the same as is now used to prop up the global warming theory, being our very short and data flawed contemporary record of annual temperatures, and the historical record of the same.
