Electronic Equipment Endangered ~ Eaten by Ants ??

Nice find, looked for some more info on it and this came up eventually.

"A few months ago the Johnson Space Center, one of NASA’s major space facilities, was forced to call Tom Rasberry after NASA officials found the ants inside their facility.

After controlling the JSC invasion, Rasberry said, “With the computer systems they have in there, it could devastate the facility. If these ants got into the facility in the numbers they have in other locations, well, it would be awful. I've been in this business for 32 years, and this is unlike anything I've ever seen. Anything. When you bring in entomologists from all over the U.S. and they're in shock and awe, that shows you what it's like." [Computerworld]

When news spread about the infestation at NASA, Frank Michel, spokesperson for Houston mayor Bill White, received a call from a Russian government official. Mr. Michel reported, “I got a call from Moscow wanting to know if NASA was safe.” He said, “I reassured the Russians we’re O.K..” [The New York Times]"

If the BBC is checking out BoT, then I think they should send Lonecat a nice bonus, or at least a thank you, for his exposure of their fine articles to the readership of this site. I have a few more ideas if they want to pay heed to any suggestions. Just kidding everyone, they don't have to follow up on everything I say.

One main difference though is they produce these magnificent blooms not to attract mates but to attract a courier for the sweets for their potential mates. But the flower is still all about reproduction as is the flamboyant plumage on some birds.

Yep , the programme was about how the guys were finding brown bears slaughtered and 3/4 eaten.... sometimes with weird displays of body parts around... like the hands and delicates left to one side with the body turned inside out...
They drew likeness to scenes from horror movies, and couldnt understand what was overpowering and devouring these young brown bears...to such an extent that they were killed and eaten there and then.
Turns out the killers were the black bears ... hungry... and were eating , like you say , on the spot, But didnt eat the hands etc... They didnt usually share the same land, but hunger had forced the black bears into the woods , where the brown bears usually foraged etc

All really interesting ...

If you've seen the pics taken by a Japanese ship of this large creature taking the bait, it's truely amazing.
Where are all the Bees going?

Kira, I think you're about right on there. That's why they can't determine the CCD issue. There's more than one main factor to consider. And there are even more minor influences. Could these bees have not been climatized to certain regions? A native fungus? Toxins? Drought or flood? Parasites? Vandalism? Natural phenomenon such as cold snaps, heat waves, wind storms & other bees & wasps? Over abundance of bees? Then bees are designed to pick up particles to distribute. Anything un-natural substances can then be spread amongst the colony. Herbicides can do much more harm than what they are designated for. Dust & pollens not familiar to the bees might have detrimental effects. Now any of these & other factors can have a negative impact but then how do they work in concert? Any one of these could be the key to a given situation.

The main issue in my eyes is the increase in the numbers of these negative influences. The second is the decrease in the numbers of backups when there is an obvious threat in relying on one product that can & does have far reaching implications.

This was the simplest description I could find on Nicotinoids. We also have to consider methods of pest control that incorporate some very nasty ingredients. In an agricultural region, there would have to be some forms of pest control. How about we reconsider what should be legally used? This is a complicated situation that has a lot of variables to ponder. The more nastiness we can exclude from the equations, the nicer the end product. Right on.

"Britsh" dinosaur like crocodile discovered

This seems to have been a mean little bugger. At 40 feet long that is. Baryonyx walkeri appears to have crouched over river banks scooping at fisb with it's 12 inch long claws that were on unusually long arms. At around 4 tons, they were too massive to be chasing fish built the way they were.

Suchomimus was similar in size & related to the British brute. Including those foot long claws. Here's the press release from National Geographic about the discovery in Africa in November 1998.
