"Slam dunk" is a term coined by the US professional basketball announcers, used to describe a very forceful lay-up, where the player slams the ball through the net. It is a term that seems to have spread through the modern vernacular at an alarming rate, and used inappropriately for many things.

Astronomy Forums - The growing threat of space junk.

Here is a very relevant article of the growing dangers of space junk in Earth orbit. I feel particlularly cross with China for irresponsably scattering even more junk all over the place by demonstrating its anti-missile capacity. Something has definitely got to be done to solve this junk problem. Even frozen drops of urine or other liquids could be more dangerous than a speeding bullet when you consider their immense velocities and could mean death to an astronaut on a space-walk or ev ...

Yes, and I was particularly impressed by the snowy scene above. I get the feeling that those are not your actual meteor craters in the snow but the result of a snow-ball fight. Note the tracks of ski runs or "pistes" at the top. Would it be too much to suggest that we have here an alien winter-sports resort? If so, maybe the "aliens" are not quite so alien after all.

NASA's MESSENGER Probe's recent fly-by of Mercury, has detected more concentrations of Iron and Titanium on the Planet's surface, than has been previously detected.

In spite of several past fly-bys, our knowledge of the Universe is still below 1% and many new mysteries are still to be unravelled.

While I am new here at BoT, I am not new to the many anomalies in our solar system. Hoagland and others not withstanding. He seems to stop at discussing out right war in our solar system though, as do most. Go figure.

The US Air Force's GPS 2R-20 Global Postioning Satellite, launched earlier this year in March 2009, has failed to deliver and missed its target to enter operational service, due to continuous Signal Distortions being received.

"The satellite's signal distortion is permanent, and if brought into operational service its impact on users would be variable and application-specific," said a Global Positioning Systems Wing spokesperson at the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center.

Eris (Minor Planet 136199) is a Dwarf Planet, that is classified as a Plutoid (A Dwarf Planet that orbits Sol further out than Neptune).

Eris orbits Sol in a highly Eliptical Orbit, sharply inclined at an angle of 44 Degress to the plane of the Ecliptic, with an orbital period of 558 years (Pluto 247,86 years).

The official International Astronomical Union's (IAU) defination of a Dwarf Planet is as follows:-

Astronomy Forums - Video: So How Slow Is Light Speed ?

Well, the speed of light is too slow for any feasable interstellar space travel.

But not for the astronaughts... I've read that when an object is going near the speed of light, time seems to speed up. So the astronaughts will get to thier destination in a matter of seconds to them. The only problem is, it would be decades for us.

So speed of light would be more useful for time travel.

I wonder how they will create a worm hole.

Zetanian,

Yet you cannot deny that it is there blocking us from seeing what is there.

True. But the origin of it might as well be a software glitch or whatever.

Yes, but it could also be a deliberate cover up of Wormwood/X.

Russia's Space Agency Chief, Anatoly Perminov is proposing to build a new Russian Spaceship, which will be equipped with a Nuclear-powered Engine.

The preliminary design could be ready by 2012, and permitting enough funding, the Spaceship could be ready for blast-off in circa 2021.

Finally the Ares 1-X Rocket managed to blast-off without a hitch, reaching an altitude of 130 000 Feet (39 624 Metres) after 2 minutes, before exhausting its Rocket Fuel.

"The vehicle flew even better than we expected," said Bob Ess, Ares 1-X mission manager. "We completely met our success criteria, and we actually blew them away."

I like the blast-off time:- 11:30 AM (EDT) / 15:30 PM (GMT).

Astronomy Forums - Asteroid Detonates High Above Indonesia

Back on October 8, 2009, an incoming Asteroid detonated 15-20 Kilometres (9.3-12.4 Miles) above South Sulawesi, Indonesia, releasing an energy of equivalent to +/- 50 000 Tons of TNT, or three times more powerful than the World War II Atomic Bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.

"However, the blast caused no damage on the ground because of the high altitude, 15 to 20 kilometres above Earth's surface", said Astronomer Peter Brown of the University of Western Ontario (UWO), Canada.

Wladimir Lyra, an expert on Planet Formation, has proposed renaming the 403 Extrasolar Planets, from their normal Scientific drab letter/numeral combinations, to more well known names based on Greek and Roman Mythology.

However the International Astronomical Union (IAU), considers the idea impractical, given that many more Extra Solar Planets are likely to be discovered in the future.
