Sorry Lonecat, hunker down & make the best of it. Some of these things grow to massive proportions. They are very unpredictable. We've had a few flare ups over the years. They can change direction quickly, slow down & even stop over a specific location, as if it wanted to make sure it did enough damage. The surge & rainfall damage alone can be devestating.
Let's say we manage to break up a hurricane. It will still be a massive storm causing a halt in all commercial transportation. That is just the start.
The only successful way to come out of a hurricane situation unscathed is re-enforcement. Everything. New Orleans? Weak infrastructure that governments put too much trust behind. Storm windows during hurricane season. Thicker building materials with thicker walls in everybuilding. We build sheds sturdier than most houses elsewhere. It's worth it.
I took this photo this spring. Its 3 - 4 minutes from my house. Every time I see it wonder why it's still standing. The fellow who owns it says he'll keep it there because people love to take pictures of it.

It has looked like that now for 20 years. That's the ocean behind it.
That goes for your property as well. Driving spikes a couple of feet into the ground along the perimeter of your yard. Planting deep rooted trees & shrubs. Good drainage including weeping tile is essential & you don't want any low areas. Move your land around. Fill in dips in the ground with high areas. There can be high & low spots but they have to be able to drain water to lower ground at at least one location on your property or to the side to a ditch.
With the increase in number & ferocity of hurricanes, there has to be an attitude adjustment by those who are supposed to be in the know on these things & able to do something. In many cases there is a specific reason behind the loss of lives & property. In most of those cases those reasons were known before the disaster that hit them & could have easily been resolved. That's it for now I guess. Hopefully, things'll calm down a bit in that region.
