Has anybody followed these folks before? I watched the thursday kick off, where they started at the tower bridge. Every time I see those folks I can't get past the thought that they are entertainment, fictional... I wondered if anyone else might have information to help that judgement. I mean they offer up the tower bridge (started 1886, est. 1894) as the starting point to jack the ripper... crimes of 1888. Just bugged the hell out of me.
They are continuing the "hunt" through october 31st,

Interesting there, Whale. And welcome to BoT.
I havent followed the Travel people much, and havent really been up to date on the Jack the Ripper case. I do remember though a very interesting interview with novelist Patricia Cornwall a year or so ago about the case.
She's written a book about it and firmly believes that Jack the Ripper was Walter Sickert, a well known and respected painter of the time. I did a quick search and found this review of her book and theories on this forum page:

Very thought provoking.

Thank you for the welcoming words, I do have the Patricia Cornwall book myself. I haven't read it yet, I read "The Complete History of Jack the Ripper by Philip Sugden, ISBN 0786702761 " prior to opening her book. I did find his take and approach to be very interesting, but he discounts alot of Cornwall's book as "suiting circumstance to theory" (The quoted text is my take). I shelved her work until I had put enough distance between myself and Mr. Sugden's work that I could hopefully approach her work with minimal influence from his. Having said all that, I'll read her work soon and probably try and find a place to ask some questions. I'm afflicted with questions, people I know tell me they believe what they see, me I tend to say I saw it, so what did I really see? Oh well, back to my questions. Thank you for your time in responding to my post.

P.S. Edited to provide a short review link to Sugden's Work.

Thanks for that link.
I dont believe I've ever heard of Sugden before. His book sounds like a very interesting read. Will have to keep an eye on that one. Thanks.

I'm with Carlisleboy on this one. I'd love to see real, conclusive evidence as to the fakery. Everytime I watch an episode of MH including some 6 of the 12 hours they pitched for halloween, I think I'm getting treated to an elaborate fiction. I've seen an episode where they "asked a spirit to stop the mechanism of a clock" and then they show it stopping on camera, only they show just the top of the mechanism... Making me think okay so your hand is under the shot. In another episode there was a series of coded rapping responses to questions, now it seems to me that all this evidence that arrises each episode would be significant... if it was real.
Besides, for self proclaimed ghost hunting professionals, I'd swear that woman's entire job was to alternate between looking pensive and freaking out in bleep filled panic.

This was something I read a while back, I'm like most here, in that MH is not my favourite viewing, the odd time that I have watched it, it's only for footage, or see if I can catch 'the best of' simply because the show reminds me of Scooby Doo, almost all panic and disappear or its OTT emotional.
There's a real opportunity for someone to do justice to this phenomena, without making it too dry and scientific, I just wish producers wouldn't categorise paranormal shows as light entertainment.
Whale, my thoughts are like yours regarding this. I've never been to one of the shows though.
There doesn't seem to be a happy medium (bad pun) between shows that exaggerate things and claim phenomena, and ones that deny all phenomena no matter how convincing the evidence.
Was just reading about the hunt for Jack the Ripper in Fortean Times, amazing the things that were done to catch him.
