The extinction of the Australian pygmies

From the 1940s until the 1960s, it was fairly widely known there were pygmies in Australia. They lived in North Queensland and had come in from the wild of the tropical rainforests to live on missions in the region. This was a fact recorded at the time not only in anthropological textbooks and articles but also in popular books about the Australian Aborigines. There was even an award-winning children's book tracing their origins. The more famous photographs of the Australian pygmies were reproduced in both the academic and the popular literature.

At the time, there was controversy about their origins but not over the fact of their existence. In 1962, the first volume of Manning Clark's History of Australia recorded their presence on its first two pages and repeated the then influential anthropological theory about their origins and their place in the waves of migration of hunter-gatherer peoples from Asia who populated the Australian continent in the millennia before the British arrived in 1788. Yet, since then, the Australian pygmies have been totally obliterated from public memory. To test just how complete this process has been, over recent months we have questioned a wide range of friends and acquaintances. Although most were well-educated and well-read people, none had ever heard of the pygmies, not even when we used some of their other, once-familiar alternative names such as "Negritos" and "Barrineans". A few friends scoffed at the notion and demanded some evidence. They wouldn't believe us until we emailed them the photographs.

The Encyclopedia of Aboriginal Australia (1994), published by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, today does its best to disguise these people. It lists some of their tribes, including the Djabuganjdji, Mbarbaram (Barbaram) and Yidinjdji (Indindji), but does not mention a word about their stature. Only its entry "Rainforest Region" records the existence of "small, curly-haired people with languages which have distinctive features", but the accompanying photograph of Yidinjdji tribesmen taken in 1893 does not give any scale or point of comparison to show that these adult males were only about 140 centimeters (four feet six inches) tall.

Two examples are sufficient to illustrate the kinds of hidden histories that use this celestial chronology. The first example explicitly invokes astronomical processes because a star composed of light-beings (sometimes celestial beings or ‘angels’) is said to circle the earth causing cycles of change. For example, Scallion (1995b) writes that "Prior to major Earth changes and major shifts in consciousness, spiritual forces send guidance to prepare us for these changes...a Blue Star, that moves through the heavens in regular cycles, such as a comet, except this celestial object is pure spiritual forces... This same star also visited Earth 12,000 years ago, to warn the world of the coming of the Flood - the sinking of Atlantis." Some versions of this model have the light-beings descending to earth to create humanity, and invoke Aboriginal stories as evidence for these events:

My Aboriginal teachers relate the extraordinary tale of their origins as free-living ‘Light beings’ beyond this dimension, who materialised onto a Paradise World that was somehow corrupted and destroyed by ‘Dark Forces’. (White 1994:16)



The second example comes from Lawlor’s (1991) Voices of the first day, in which the human occupation of Australia reflects the larger cycles of glaciations, magnetism and the flows of ‘Universal feminine and masculine forces’. According to Lawlor (1991:92) the occupation of Australia is far longer than allowed by conventional archaeology, and is tied to the intrinsic rhythms of the earth. He summarises this prehistory as follows:

The 120,000 years of the Ice Epoch is concurrent with the approximate 120,000 years of Aboriginal culture in Australia. Both of these are in harmony with the 60,000 years of cultural oscillation that the ancient Dravidians called the Yugas, a period that extended from the Golden Age to the Age of Kali.

We noticed that the circles and shapes appeared to be carved over pre-existing petroglyphs that had all but worn away with the passing of time. The newer petroglyphs were thousands of years old, so the older ones were extremely old.

In Australia, "old" means "very old." Some of the Aboriginal people make reference to the last Ice Age when they give the family narratives -- and that was 30,000 years ago!

The Maoris even claimed decent from this mysterious race. Belief in far away China of a mysterious "land to the south" had persisted since the dim ages of pre-recorded Chinese history. Known as the land of Locack, its existence today is verified by ancient maps, some dating back 2500 years, which besides the islands of South-East Asia, display the undoubted though crude outline of Australia. According too ancient traditions the land of Locack was a vast continent so plentiful in Gold and other precious minerals that it surpassed all over lands.

Also its inhabitants were said to be idolators and expert astronomers. Who were this mysterious people? Certainly not the primitive Aborigines, a stone age race which has never risen above the carving of crude petroglyphs or cave paintings. The Aborigines worship mysterious "culture heroes" and a supreme being called Biame. In some ancient legends these "culture heroes" came to Australia from across the sea in great vessels, as is the case of the north-west Kimberley tribes, whose cave art often depicts these strange visitors which they called the Wandjina.

But the Wandjina are represented often clothed in garments typical of ancient Egyptians. This may be further supported by the presence of Middle East blood groups, racial features, and ancient Egyptian words still spoken by tribes-people to this day. In other parts of Australia the "culture heroes" re-appear as people who entered the continent to "carve out the mountains and hills."

Or who, as in the case of the "culture heroes" said to have inhabited the Bathurst district west of Sydney, built large structures out of often enormous stones. it is evident that there were many different "culture heroes" visiting and staying lengthy periods in Australia. Just who were these various "culture heroes" remains a mystery-but it is certain evidence that Australia was a land known to many ancient civilisations many, many thousands of years before recorded history. Among the enigmatic "culture heroes" are a mysterious people called the Uru, a white-skinned race which, the Aborigines say, watched the stars, shaped the countryside, and erected "sacred stones" and other structures.

The disclosures support the traditions of the ancient Chinese chroniclers, and it was these very same traditions which prompted the early Chinese navigators to undertake extensive sea voyages southward beyond their traditional trading base in the islands of South East Asia, to the mysterious southern continent which today we call Australia. The fact that the peoples of the Pacific, and also the Inca and Maya of ancient central America, knew of the land of Uru may help to explain certain enigmatic relics which have come to light in the Australian-New Guinea region.

The Chairman of the Board is Greg Tucker. Mr Tucker says no-one knows if the Rainbow Serpent is still in the Weeli Wolli Spring, but he says if it is there, it could be disturbed by mining activity.

GREG TUCKER: Well the Rainbow Serpent is either, we don’t know if it’s still there or not. The way the Rainbow Serpent used to dwell, it’s dry. And it could annoy him, it could develop into some, how you put it, it could be like a big storm, it could create a problem in the area.


DAVID WEBER: Mr Tucker says that for Indigenous people to survive in remote areas, they need funding. And the funding hasn’t been coming from governments. Mr Tucker says a trust fund will be set up for royalty payments from the mine.
