Potential Dangers of Protein Powders

I had a feeling there was something not quite right about protein powders....

Though good for weight loss.. and muscle building... people seemed to age .. more health problems seem to occur...

Remember it is a processed food....

Studies Show Potential Dangers of Denatured Protein in Foods and Protein Supplements

Quote:
the protein–derived toxins which can be formed during the production of some protein powders commonly used as ingredients in nutritional supplements.

We saw how the harsh alkali chemicals, used in the production of protein powders such as soy protein and calcium caseinate, lead to the formation of various denatured, cross linked, and structurally altered protein–toxins like lysinoalanine.

And, we also saw how these toxic protein structures are able to “feed” the bad bacteria in our gastrointestinal tracts leading to the subsequent production of yet more protein–toxins such as phenols, cresols, indoles, amines, and ammonia – all of which are implicated in the development of colon cancer and various gastrointestinal disorders.

So, the existing research makes it clear that we should take every step possible to avoid consuming products made with overly–processed and denatured protein ingredients like soy protein, whey protein concentrate, and calcium caseinate.

And similarly, because of the high–heat processing (pasteurization) they must undergo, we should also take steps to eliminate prepared drinks (like ready–to–drink protein shakes, and soymilks) which are formulated using these same protein ingredients. High–heat processing has been shown to cause the production of shockingly high amounts of such protein–toxins, and, as evidence of their toxicity, these drinks have been shown to dramatically elevate cholesterol levels.

I think the article may be a bit misleading. Although it does mention three types of proteins, soy protein, whey protein concentrate, and calcium caseinate which are detrimental to one's health if ingested in large amounts, most serious body builders steer away from these types because of their estrogen producing capabilities. The key here is in "de-naturing".....As an ex natural body builder I was aware of such.....Also, although body builders get a bad name because of alleged steroid use and such, it should be noted they have always been on the cutting edge of science when it comes to the effects of certain products on the body. Matter of fact, many favorable studies have been completed only after receiving evidence from the body building world.

Oh, soy protien is def not good for males because it DOES have strong estrogen properties and will de-nature you.....All in all this my opinion based on my own personal experience and is not intended as advice of any kind.

Wouldn't there be estrogen in whey powder? it is dairy.. estrogen juice.... then you begin to worry about bovine growth hormones and all the other additives fed or GMO'd to cows these days...so you need to find an organic source....

cancerbitch

what about these versions I have come across..

Good question:

Whilst whey, may have the inclination for estrogenic effects on the male, it does so at less of a cost than that of soy. Soy is known to have estrogenic properties due to it's make up. What makes soy even more detrimental is the "de-nurturing process" , key word, de-nature. Soy is manufactured (as well as other sources of protein including whey at times) using less expensive ion-exchange processing, which denatures (i.e. destroys) the protein sub-fractions (including powerful immune-booster, lactoferrin) through the use of heat and chemicals.

Indeed Whey protein is derived from milk proteins as part of the cheese manufacturing process. But, Whey protein isolate is the richest source of the 8 essential amino acids and branched-chain amino acids your body needs for growth, energy, and vibrant health. Whey protein is ideal for:

Growing children and teenagers. ADD and ADHD are common childhood "diseases", which many consider to be diseases of sugar addiction. Whey protein helps stabilize children's blood sugar, increases production of feel-good brain chemicals which helps increase mental clarity and focus, and helps prevent and reduce the symptoms of ADD and ADHD.

Pregnant or lactating women. Protein is essential for the proper fetal and infant development, particularly brain development, and helps prevent gestational diabetes.

Adults. As we get older, our bodies are less efficient at absorbing protein. Whey protein is the most easily absorbed protein available. It will reverse the aging process and rebuild your immune system. You will rarely if ever be sick and you will begin to look and feel years younger.

Busy people. The busier you are, the more energy you need.

Whey protein helps increase mental and physical energy instantly.
Athletes and body builders. It is the most easily and quickly absorbed protein available, for maximum muscle synthesis.

The benefits of Whey are thus:
Stabilizes blood sugar and prevents diabetes by slowing assimilation of carbohydrates into glucose in the blood stream.

Reduces stress and alleviates depression by slowing production of the powerful stress hormone, cortisol, and promoting the release of serotonin, a calming neurotransmitter (brain chemical).

Promotes fat loss by enhancing the release of glucagon (builds muscle, burns fat) and inhibiting release of insulin (encourages fat storage).

Builds muscle by stimulating maximum protein synthesis.

Enhances the immune system by raising the body's levels of glutathione, which is a powerful antioxidant produced by the body to protect cells and neutralize toxins.

Increases exercise capacity.
Fights infections.

Encourages bone growth helping to prevent osteoporosis.

Has the highest biological value (a measure of nitrogen retained for growth or maintenance) of any protein because it is absorbed, utilized and retained by the body better than other proteins.

May help lower triglycerides and cholesterol.

May help prevent prostate cancer.

May help prevent chronic periodontal disease.

Soy protein on the other hand, comes from soybeans, which is a legume, a source of carbohydrate. There are three problems with soy protein. The protein from soy is not complete as it is missing one of the essential amino acids, called methionine. Most soy protein powders are fortified with this amino acid, making it complete. However it is important to know that most soy protein products are processed using hexane and other toxic chemicals, which are not safe for the body. Also, the body does not easily absorb soy protein–it has a low biological value, meaning a significant percentage of the protein passes through your body unused. Thus it is an inferior source of protein to whey protein.

Most people today are deficient in lean protein. It is very difficult to eat too much lean protein. Many people think they are getting sufficient protein from dairy, eggs, and red meat. However, these sources of protein are not high quality because they contain a lot of saturated fat as well. Some of the healthiest and fittest people in the world are natural body builders, because they are some of the leanest people in the world. And to give you a general idea, they (as did I) eat on average somewhere between 300 and 500 grams of pure lean protein every day, in the form of whey protein, chicken, white fish, tuna, salmon, egg whites, cottage cheese, etc. That is equivalent to approximately 20 chicken breasts per day. That is pretty difficult to ingest in a day for the average person. Even when eating this amount of lean protein, along with sufficient water to avoid dehydration, there are no known cases of kidney dysfunction in natural body builders who eat a balanced diet with adequate hydration. Also, research has shown that traditional Eskimos eat a diet of 95% meat and raw fats, and there are very few reported cases of kidney disease, heart disease, or osteoporosis.

Oh, For years Whey was used as animal feed. Veterinarians noticed how healthy the animals got when they were fed Whey, which led to study into the benefits of Whey.

DISCALIMER:

Again: THE VIEWS ABOVE ARE NOT INTENDED AS EXPERTISE NOR ADVICE OF ANY KIND. THIS POST MERELY REPRESENTS THE VIEW OF THE AUTHOR FROM HIS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND RESEARCH BOTH IN AND OUT OF THE WORLD OF NATURAL BODY BUILDING AND THE USE OF NUTRITIONAL SUPPLAMENTS..

Wink Dr. Atkins would have been proud of you!!!

Puzzled

Yes.. I wonder if later they would consider a high protein .. low carb deit as a kind of fast.. that will rid the body of various disease producing micro organisms.. such as Candida.. help regulate the pancreas by giving it a rest.....

add to that healthy salads and greens along with berries.. loose the extra flab...
along with and exercise program..

I could see it working!!!

Maybe do this twice a year.. for about a month or two at a time....

No....I never believed in the Atkins diet. A high protein, low carb diet will make anyone, especially evrday normal people, a mean person as you would be carb deprived.....Body needs carbs to function. Plus you would pass a lot of gas.

Let's get back to the subject at hand. Your orginal post which was somewhat misleading. The fact is
