I'm with Person1 on this.
TV stations are not a "service to the public". They are big business. They are each a part of a massive corporation. Ownership and control of those massive corporations vests in a very small number of very powerful people. Even without getting into conspiracy theory it is obvious that what is good for these super-powerful and super-wealthy individuals is NOT what is good for you - the consumer of the media. What is good for them is if you get semi-brain-dead enough that all you do is go to work to earn money and then come home to watch the garbage they are spewing at you with intermittent breaks to buy! buy! buy! all the horsedangle they are advertising. That is what is good for them. Does that sound like it's good for you?
Thought not.
If you are open to conspiracy theory then it all looks a WHOLE LOT worse than that. The owners and controllers of the media are a part of the same cabal that is running everything. They own the factories that make weapons. They own the factories that make medicines. They own... well... they pretty much own everything that is worth owning. Including (and especially) your politicians! And what best serves their agenda is if you not only rot your brain and buy anything and everything they advertise but... it goes further... that you believe the constant stream of lies, distortion and dis-information that they call "news". That you vote and then believe that you have exercised your choice. That you support any and every violent, destructive, megalomaniac action they might wish to perpetrate. That you repeat the mantra "the government would never do anything BAD! The government is GOOD!". That you come to believe that THEY are the nation and that seeing them for the enemy they are is "unpatriotic".
How's THAT for some reasons to not watch TV.
Oh and also... getting outside, getting some exercise and breathing some fresh air is also nice.
