Antipsychotic drugs for kids raise hope, worry Erin Allday, San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer Monday, June 22, 2009
Increasingly powerful antipsychotic drugs available on the market, and growing evidence that starting these medications early can help children with conditions like bipolar disorder, is putting doctors under more pressure than ever to diagnose and treat young people with mental illnesses.
As a result, some doctors say, mental illness, especially bipolar disorder, has been overdiagnosed much the same way attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was in the 1980s.
"ADHD was the diagnosis du jour in the '80s. Now it's become bipolar disorder," said Dr. Andrew Giammona, who heads the psychiatry department at Children's Hospital Oakland. "We're in a quick-fix society, and parents want to believe that if we had this treatment we can get it fixed and move on."
Before the 1990s, bipolar disorder was a rare diagnosis in children under age 19. By 1994, U.S. doctors were reporting about 25 cases per 100,000 young people, and by 2002 that number had jumped to 1,000 cases per 100,000, according to data from the National Center for Health Statistics.
Medication was prescribed for about two-thirds of those patients, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Antipsychotic medications are among the most popular made by pharmaceutical companies. . . .

Oh good. Chemically inhibit spiritual awareness and growth. Good plan. Wanna keep the little darlin's nicely fitted to the social boxes they're stuffed in; can't be accommodating anyone who falls outside the 'norm' now, can we?
Grr.

And all to enrich the CEOs of pharmaceutical companies.

sweet. get kids hooked on drugs, then wonder why they grow up to be drug addict or alcoholics. that is why my kids are not on any of these drugs.
Ritalin = methamphetimine . doc says "its not the same" i said" the effects are the same. the reaction is the same. the symptoms it produces are the same. chemically its almost identical. thus if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, its a duck."

I've been watching that Supernanny.. show for a while... and the difference she can make in a couple of weeks.. of just firm.. loving care with these kids.....
Some of those kids were so bad at first... even I would have considered medicating either myself or the kids..... But each time .. with her common sense... firm but loving guidance..some behavioural training.. . the house gets transformed into joyful loving homes...
Maybe they need another show... the Super Lifestyle coach... to help turn these kids around ...
It has been scientifically proven that good counselling therapy works just as efficiently or better with Bipolar as does the meds.. and for even longer..
Some fish oil tablets are said to work too...as well as Kelp..

Kelp is also high in lithium the one essential element often missing from those suffering bipolar disorder. Taking kelp instead of the pharmaceutical lithium allows you to get this vital element in its natural state. Since it is compounded with all its other properties you will even benefit more than by taking the pharmaceutical lithium - so everything stays in balance.
Kelp in your diet - another one of the natural treatments for bipolar disorder is a must. Be sure you are not allergic to iodine before taking this herb. It's a good idea to check with your doctor before taking kelp if you are on any type of medication or psychiatric drug.[/url]
