The Global Digital Elevation Model was created using nearly 1.3million images collected by a Japanese camera on board Nasa's Terra spacecraft. It is made up of a giant grid of 23,000 tiles, with each height point spaced 98ft apart. It shows a detailed representation of the planet's land mass. In this colourised version, low elevations are purple, medium elevations are greens and yellows, and high elevations are orange, red and white.

That IS interesting.

My first thought, looking at that map was: "if the water are going to rise I don't want to be in the purple".

I don't know that the waters ARE going to rise. But that is certainly one of the possible outcomes of all this climate change stuff that is going on. We are right now in a period of flux. Change is coming. I thing we can expect a pretty crazy solar peak as this cycle really kicks in. That could certainly result in a very rapid melt of large ice bodies (as per this article which I just saw in Firey's thread). It has happened before and it could happen again. Even if nothing else comes of the whole 2012 thing solar peak is going to be big.

I don't want to be living in the purple.
