Suicides on the rise by Kevin Herrera
June 29, 2009
DOWNTOWN SANTA MONICA — The number of people who have taken their own lives in Santa Monica so far this year has reached a level not seen in recent years, leaving some to wonder if the economic downturn is responsible.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been 20 suicide attempts within the city, 10 of which have been fatal, according to records released by the Santa Monica Police Department.
If an autopsy reveals that a woman found Wednesday morning just north of the Santa Monica Pier committed suicide, that number will rise to 11, well over the average, which is eight a year, said SMPD Sgt. Jay Trisler.
In 2008, there were nine fatalities and 15 attempts.
SMPD Chief Tim Jackman grew concerned when he saw the numbers and felt releasing the information would raise awareness so that families could be more cognizant of any changes in a loved one’s behavior, as well as learn about services available in the area.
“Just like any type of trend that we see, the chief wants the public to be made aware of it so that they can prevent them and identify the warnings signs,â€

Sad to say, but this is a trend which is happening nationwide. In my neck of the woods, several whole families decided life was not worth living after losing everything they owned and worked hard for.
Many seniors, who lost their pensions and life savings, are also committing suicide. They do not have the time or energy to start all over again. There is no where for them to go and no one left to care for them as their health fails.
It breaks my heart to see this once great country fall to it's knees. Unless people start opening their eyes, turn off those blasted cell phones and take a GOOD look around them and try to help instead of living only for themselves, we may as well kiss our butts goodbye too.

In this documentary, Mad Cow, Sacred Cow, its talks about how many farmers have commited suicide because of the lose of industry for them.
I would how much longer this kinda thing has to go on before we all start to realize that we have to move to a simpler way of life, move back to the smaller communities and become more self-reliant, and not so obsessed with the colour of money.. We work for the sake of work, it rarely gets us ahead, we just work to make a larger cog rich off our labours.
