A legendary site in China, said to contain possible relics left by extraterrestrial beings, will finally be formally examined. A group of nine Chinese scientists are preparing to go to west China's Qinghai Province this month, in what will be the first truly scientific examination of relics said by some to have been left by visitors from another world.
The site, known by local people as "the ET relics", is on Mount Baigong. The area is steeped in mystery - twin lakes on the north of the mountain are quite different as one is composed of fresh water and the other salty water.
The so-called ET relics structure is located on the south bank of the salty lake. Eye-witnesses say that it is between 50 to 60 meters high and looks like a pyramid. The front of this structure has three triangular openings which lead to subterranean caves.
Inside the structure there is a "half-pipe" about 40 centimeters in diameter. Above the cave there are said to be a dozen pipes of various diameters which run into the mountain. These pipes are all the same color as the surrounding rocks, a red brownish tint.
Some of the pipes are said to run into the lake, while scattered around the bank there are a large number of rusty scraps, as well as pipes of various diameters and strangely shaped stones. A sample of these scraps was analyzed once by a local smeltery, and were found to be composed of 30 percent ferric oxide with a large amount of silicon dioxide and calcium oxide.
"The large content of silicon dioxide and calcium oxide is a result of long interaction between iron and sandstone, which means the pipes must be very old," said Liu Shaolin, the engineer who did the analysis.
"This result has made the site even more mysterious," said Qin Jianwen, head of the local government's publicity department. "Nature is harsh here. There are no residents, let alone modern industry in the area, only a few migrating herdsmen to the north of the mountain."
The area is high in altitude, making it an ideal place for astronomy, Qin said. In fact, the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is located nearby, which houses a large radio telescope.
Yang Ji, a research fellow at the observatory, said the structure was mysterious and the extraterrestrial hypothesis was worth investigating. "But scientific means must be employed to prove whether t it is true," he added.
